Abnormal Moles
Characteristics Of Abnormal Moles
A mole is more likely to be abnormal if:
• One-half of the mole does not match the other half (i.e. it is asymmetric)
• The edge (border) of the mole is jagged or irregular
• More than one color is present in the mole
• It is larger than 5mm in diameter (the size of a pencil eraser)
Remember, thin melanomas(a form of skin cancer) are curable! Get to know your skin and moles well. If changes occur, report them to your physician and if he/she thinks it is necessary, a biopsy can be done to detect the melanoma early while it is curable. Often this can be done by surgery alone.
